WASH Assistant (Emergency) - Uror, South Sudan

About the role

NRC South Sudan is recruiting two WASH Technical Assistants (emergency) for a 5-month field-based assignment in Uror, Jonglei State, reporting to the WASH Officer. The role provides day-to-day technical guidance and supervision of emergency WASH infrastructure construction and rehabilitation, ensuring safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene promotion in line with international humanitarian standards. The contract can be extended.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out WASH needs assessments, KAP surveys and baseline data collection, and identify vulnerable groups
• Supervise construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of sanitation facilities and water points, including chlorination, testing, trucking distribution and borehole/handpump repairs
• Monitor contractor and community worker work against Bills of Quantities and enforce SPHERE standards, health and safety and child safeguarding
• Mobilize communities, train volunteers and hygiene promoters, organize awareness activities in schools and health centers, and distribute hygiene kits and NFIs
• Coordinate with implementing partners, logistics teams and local authorities, verify materials and procure supplies
• Produce weekly and monthly progress reports, maintain beneficiary and distribution records, and contribute lessons learned

Required profile

• Diploma or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Public Health, Environmental Health or a related field
• 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience in humanitarian or recovery contexts on emergency WASH projects
• Fluent English and local languages of the operational area
• Experience integrating WASH with other sectors and mainstreaming gender, disability inclusion and accountability

Required skills

• Technical drafting or reading, understanding engineering designs, drawings and BoQs
• MS Office (Word, Excel); AutoCAD, ArcGIS and GPS are an added advantage
• Water quality testing and SPHERE minimum standards
• Independent, results-oriented work under pressure in a multi-cultural environment
