Shelter and Settlement Assistant - Nyirol, South Sudan

About the role

NRC South Sudan, an independent humanitarian organization working in the country since 2004, is recruiting a Shelter and Settlement Assistant for its Nyirol project in Jonglei State. The post is field-based with high mobility at emergency locations, reports to the Shelter and Settlement Officer and lasts 5 months. It supports the Officer in beneficiary registration and verification, distribution of shelter kits and NFIs, monitoring of shelter construction and repair, community mobilization and data collection.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Shelter and Settlement Officer in day-to-day implementation, planning, execution and monitoring of project activities
• Mobilize communities, incentive workers, artisans and community shelter committees, and attend meetings with local authorities and partners on behalf of NRC
• Prepare weekly activity updates with challenges and plans for the following week
• Assist in needs assessments, beneficiary identification, registration and verification, and set up distribution points for shelter kits and NFIs
• Monitor shelter construction and repair works, follow up artisans and labourers, check materials and quality, and report issues
• Help prepare BoQs, material lists, work plans, completion certificates and works reports
• Train beneficiaries and artisans on safe construction techniques and shelter maintenance, and keep attendance records
• Support the Monitoring and Evaluation team in baseline, post-distribution and post-intervention data collection using digital tools
• Receive community feedback and complaints, refer protection or safeguarding concerns to the Officer, and document activities with photos and records

Required profile

• Diploma or certificate in Construction, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Technology, Community Development or a related field (or secondary education with relevant practical experience)
• 1-2 years of experience with humanitarian organizations, preferably in Shelter and Settlement, construction or NFI distribution
• Basic knowledge of Shelter and Settlement and NFI programming in emergency and recovery contexts
• Good command of written and spoken English
• Knowledge of the local languages and of the local context, and awareness of SPHERE standards

Required skills

• Basic computer skills (Word, Excel) and familiarity with digital data collection tools
• Ability to plan own work, work independently and manage priorities in a multi-cultural environment
• Experience in beneficiary registration, distributions or community mobilization
