Shelter & Settlement Assistant (Field)

About the role

The Shelter & Settlement Assistant supports the Shelter & Settlement Officer in delivering shelter and settlement activities for displaced communities in Nyirol, Jonglei State. The role involves beneficiary registration, distribution of kits, monitoring construction, and community mobilisation.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with needs assessments, beneficiary identification, registration and verification, ensuring inclusion of vulnerable households.
• Set up and manage distribution points for shelter kits and NFIs, handling crowd control, verification, and documentation.
• Monitor shelter construction and repair works, follow up with artisans, check material use and quality, and report issues.
• Support community shelter committees, promote balanced gender and age participation, and provide orientation on safe construction techniques.
• Collect baseline, post‑distribution and post‑intervention data using digital tools and submit weekly activity updates.

Required profile

• Diploma or certificate in Construction, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Technology, Community Development or related field, or secondary education with relevant experience.
• 1‑2 years experience with humanitarian organisations, preferably in shelter, construction or NFI distribution.
• Ability to work independently and in diverse teams, with good time‑management and flexibility.
• Basic knowledge of SPHERE standards and local context in South Sudan.
