Senior Human Rights Officer / Coordinator (Temporary)

About the role

The Senior Human Rights Officer / Coordinator will support the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, based in Juba. Reporting to the Chief of the Human Rights Inquiries Branch and the Chief of the Investigations Support Section, the incumbent will oversee investigation planning, coordination and reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise development of investigation plans, methodology and data‑collection tools.
• Support Commissioners on substantive, operational and administrative procedures.
• Manage the Secretariat’s workflow, information sharing, accountability and performance.
• Facilitate communication between Commissioners and OHCHR.
• Ensure investigations integrate gender perspectives and adhere to strategic objectives.
• Coordinate investigative and reporting tasks, including protection of victims and witnesses.
• Accompany Commissioners on field missions and act as main interlocutor with duty‑bearers, member states, UN agencies, media and other stakeholders.
• Oversee budget, finances and regular operational, financial and administrative reporting.

Required profile

• Extensive knowledge of human‑rights issues, including political, ethnic, racial, gender and socio‑economic dimensions.
• Familiarity with mandates, policies and procedures of human‑rights organisations.
• Ability to evaluate and integrate information from diverse sources and assess regional impact.
• Experience in managing complex investigations and coordinating multi‑stakeholder teams.
