Construction Engineer

About the role

UNICEF is seeking a Construction Engineer to join its Construction Unit in Juba, South Sudan. The role will support planning, implementation, monitoring and quality assurance of construction and rehabilitation projects for health and education facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Support the planning, implementation, monitoring and quality assurance of construction and rehabilitation projects across South Sudan.
• Review design documents, measurements, take‑off sheets, payment documentation and other construction records.
• Prepare construction documentation including Bills of Quantities (BOQs), drawings and technical specifications.
• Lead pre‑bid meetings, participate in tender evaluations and conduct regular site visits to ensure compliance with approved designs.
• Collaborate with contractors, consultancy firms, in‑house engineers and the Supply Section to ensure timely project delivery.
• Coordinate with government agencies, NGOs and communities to align projects with local needs.
• Monitor contractor and consultant progress and provide regular project updates.

Required profile

• Minimum three years of progressive experience in construction‑related activities, including pre‑tender work, BOQ preparation, technical specifications, drawing review, field supervision and contractor evaluation.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture.
• Fluent English; working knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
• Valid national driver’s licence and ability to drive a manual 4x4 vehicle over rough terrain (desirable).

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Database management skills.
• Preparation of Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and technical specifications.
• Construction drawing review and field supervision.
• Technical evaluation of contractors.
