Head of Survival – Health, Nutrition & WASH

About the role

The Head of Survival provides strategic and technical leadership for Save the Children’s Health and Nutrition portfolio in South Sudan, integrating Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions. Based in the Programme Quality and Impact team, the role ensures programmes are evidence‑based, safe and responsive to the needs of children, women and communities while shaping the overall Survival strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and review of the country Survival strategy, aligning Health, Nutrition and WASH priorities with the Country Strategic Plan and national policies.
• Set and monitor technical quality benchmarks, conduct field visits and joint reviews, and ensure corrective actions for health, nutrition and WASH programmes.
• Provide technical direction for integrated primary and community health services, including maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, immunisation and management of common illnesses.
• Oversee nutrition interventions covering screening, treatment of acute malnutrition, infant and young child feeding and maternal nutrition.
• Ensure WASH components such as safe water, sanitation, hand hygiene and infection prevention are effectively integrated to support health outcomes.
• Guide clinical governance, patient safety and supportive supervision through qualified clinical leads.
• Collaborate with pharmacy, supply chain and operations on forecasting, storage and availability of medicines, vaccines and nutrition supplies.
• Promote integrated programming with Child Protection, MHPSS, Education and livelihoods teams, coordinating referrals and community engagement.
• Represent Save the Children in Ministry of Health, UN agencies, donor and cluster meetings, and contribute to policy and advocacy efforts.
