Country Director – South Sudan

About the role

The Country Director will lead Action Against Hunger’s mission in South Sudan, overseeing a multi‑sectoral humanitarian programme that reaches over one million people. Reporting to senior leadership, the Director provides strategic vision, operational oversight and senior representation in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement the country strategy in line with global objectives and donor requirements.
• Ensure effective delivery of nutrition, health, WASH, protection and food security programmes across six field offices.
• Lead a team of approximately 120 staff, fostering a high‑performance culture and ensuring staff safety.
• Maintain and develop relationships with major donors (ECHO, SIDA, GAC, WFP, UNICEF, etc.) and coordinate with local authorities, NGOs and the humanitarian community.
• Oversee financial and operational compliance, risk management and reporting.
• Represent the organisation in advocacy, coordination forums and public engagements.

Required profile

• Extensive senior management experience in large‑scale humanitarian or development programmes.
• Proven ability to lead multi‑disciplinary teams in complex, insecure contexts.
• Strong track record of donor engagement and fundraising.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills with government, UN agencies and NGOs.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an asset.
