About the role
The Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Officer will lead community‑based WASH initiatives aimed at eliminating open defecation and improving hygiene practices. Working closely with local partners, the officer will design, implement and monitor programmes that promote safe sanitation, handwashing, safe water handling and menstrual hygiene management.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly activity reports, success stories and documentation of challenges and best practices.
- Facilitate community mobilisation, triggering, follow‑up and verification processes to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
- Collect, analyse and report data on sanitation coverage, hygiene behaviours and facility functionality using approved monitoring tools and digital platforms.
- Develop and implement sanitation and hygiene promotion work plans aligned with project objectives, national policies and WASH sector guidelines.
- Coordinate with government authorities, WASH Cluster partners, UNICEF, NGOs and community stakeholders to ensure harmonised programming.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, WASH, Community Development or a related field (a relevant diploma with substantial experience may be considered).
- Demonstrated experience with Community‑Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), Open Defecation Free approaches and hygiene behaviour change communication.
- Knowledge of water quality risks, fecal‑oral disease transmission and public health impacts of poor sanitation.
- Familiarity with emergency WASH programming and relevant standards such as Sphere, national WASH policies and UNICEF guidance.
Required skills
- Data analysis and reporting using spreadsheet or statistical software.
- Report writing and documentation of lessons learned.
- Use of digital data collection platforms (e.g., mWater) and monitoring tools.
- Conducting Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) surveys and post‑distribution monitoring.
- Application of WASH standards and guidelines in programme design.
