Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Officer

About the role

The Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Officer will lead community‑based activities to eliminate open defecation and improve hygiene practices. The role involves preparing regular activity reports, documenting success stories, and ensuring that programme interventions are evidence‑based and aligned with national WASH policies.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate community mobilisation, triggering, follow‑up and verification processes to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
• Collect, analyse and report data on sanitation coverage, hygiene behaviours and facility functionality using approved digital platforms.
• Design and implement context‑appropriate hygiene promotion activities, including handwashing, safe water handling, household sanitation, food hygiene and menstrual hygiene management.
• Coordinate with government authorities, WASH Cluster partners, UNICEF, NGOs and local stakeholders to ensure harmonised programming.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, WASH, Community Development or a related field (a relevant diploma with substantial experience may be considered).
• Training in sanitation and hygiene promotion, Community‑Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), behaviour change communication, School WASH and Menstrual Hygiene Management.

Required skills

• Data analysis and reporting.
• Report writing and documentation.
• Use of digital data collection and monitoring platforms (e.g., mWater).
• Conducting Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) surveys and post‑distribution monitoring.
