Material Engineer – Structural, Earthworks & Soil

About the role

The Material Engineer will oversee the investigation, testing, approval and quality control of all construction materials used in a road/highway project in South Sudan. The focus is on soils, earthworks, subgrade, embankments, concrete and structural components, ensuring compliance with project specifications and standards.

Key responsibilities

• Review and assess soil and material sources along the alignment, borrow areas and embankment sites.
• Analyse laboratory test results (CBR, particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, moisture content, compaction) and recommend suitability or corrective measures.
• Monitor excavation, filling, embankment construction and subgrade preparation, verifying layer thickness, moisture conditioning and compaction.
• Investigate settlement, instability or weak subgrade issues and propose remediation.
• Assess and control materials for bridges, culverts, retaining walls and other structures, including cement, aggregates, reinforcement steel and admixtures.
• Coordinate sampling, testing and monitoring of concrete production, placement, vibration, finishing and curing.

Required profile

• Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or related field.
• Experience in material testing and quality control on road or highway projects.
• Ability to interpret technical specifications, drawings and method statements.
• Strong analytical skills for evaluating soil and construction material properties.
