Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Officer

About the role

The Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Officer will lead community‑based efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve hygiene practices in Kuajok. Working with local partners, the officer will design and implement activities that promote safe water handling, handwashing, and menstrual hygiene management, ensuring inclusive solutions for all vulnerable groups.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly activity reports, success stories, lessons learned and documentation of challenges.
• Facilitate community mobilisation, triggering, follow‑up and verification processes to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
• Collect, analyse and report data on sanitation coverage, hygiene practices and facility functionality using approved monitoring tools and digital platforms.
• Develop and implement sanitation and hygiene work plans aligned with project objectives, national policies and Sphere standards.
• Design and deliver context‑appropriate hygiene promotion activities, including handwashing with soap, safe water storage, household sanitation, food hygiene and menstrual hygiene management.
• Coordinate with government authorities, WASH Cluster partners, UNICEF, NGOs and community stakeholders to ensure harmonised programming.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, WASH, Community Development or related field (a relevant diploma with substantial experience may be considered).
• Training and experience in Community‑Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), behaviour change communication, school WASH and emergency WASH programming.
• Strong knowledge of sanitation and hygiene promotion approaches, ODF strategies and gender‑inclusive programming.

Required skills

• Use of digital data collection platforms (e.g., mWater) for monitoring and reporting.
• Data analysis, report writing and presentation of findings.
• Application of monitoring tools and KAP surveys to assess hygiene behaviours.
