Protection Specialist – Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

About the role

The Protection Specialist will work under the head of Programme and support the Protection Coordinator in leading DRC’s gender‑based violence (GBV) prevention and response programming across the country. The role provides technical leadership, quality assurance, mentoring and supervision to ensure survivor‑centred, protection‑sensitive and ethical GBV interventions.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure DRC and partner GBV interventions are designed and implemented according to best practices and inter‑agency standards.
• Develop guidelines, SOPs and tools for safe, quality protection activities and supervise their rollout.
• Provide technical oversight for GBV prevention, risk mitigation, survivor‑centred case management, psychosocial support, safe spaces and referral pathways.
• Establish supervision, case review and case‑conferencing mechanisms; coach supervisors and caseworkers.
• Support service mapping, referral pathway updates and coordination with health, MHPSS, legal and child protection services.
• Advise sector teams on GBV risk mitigation and safe referral, ensuring staff respond appropriately to disclosures.
• Lead ethical use of GBVIMS/GBVIMS+ and other approved case‑management information systems.
• Assess staff and partner capacity, deliver coaching, mentoring and training, and strengthen partner systems for safe service delivery.

Required profile

• Proven experience in GBV prevention and response programming within humanitarian settings.
• Strong knowledge of inter‑agency GBV standards, survivor‑centred case management and ethical data handling.
• Ability to travel frequently to DRC area offices and work in field environments.
• Experience in capacity‑strengthening, supervision and technical mentorship.

Required skills

• Proficiency with GBVIMS/GBVIMS+ case‑management information systems.
