Field Epidemiologist / Public Health Officer – Multiple Duty Stations

About the role

The World Health Organization is seeking a Field Epidemiologist/Public Health Officer to support preparedness, readiness and response to Bundibugyo Virus Disease and other priority health emergencies in high‑risk counties of South Sudan. The incumbent will be embedded at the county level to translate epidemiological data into rapid public‑health actions.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and maintain county‑level surveillance, alert‑management and event‑based surveillance systems for Bundibugyo Virus Disease and other priority threats.
• Ensure health facilities, points of entry and community networks use approved case definitions, reporting tools and notification channels.
• Receive, screen, verify and classify alerts; support rapid investigation and contact‑tracing readiness.
• Monitor readiness indicators and provide risk assessments to guide operational decisions.
• Collaborate with County Health Departments, State Ministries of Health, the National Public Health Institute and partners to operationalise national guidance.

Required profile

• Relevant academic background in epidemiology, public health or a related field.
• Experience working in emergency or outbreak settings, preferably in low‑resource environments.
• Ability to work under pressure, adapt to rapidly changing situations and travel to remote county locations.
